Portfolio companies: venture-backed, by industry, geography, funding amounts & rounds
How can I create a list of start-up or venture capital backed companies in a particular industry?


In Preqin:

  1. Click on Private Equity on the left hand side navigation.
  2. Select Venture Deals Analyst.
  3. Select Advanced Search
  4. Search by Portfolio Company
  5. You can screen by investment stage, acquired share percentage, deal date, deal size, location, industry and keyword. 
  6. Once criteria is selected click on the Search button. 
  7. You can then take a look at individual companies or download their profiles into Excel.

In Capital IQ:

  1. Mouse over menu for Screening and select Screening > Companies.
  2. Select an industry, geography, etc. using sections under Company Details.
  3. In the Company Details section, click on Ownership and select Pending and Current Sponsor Backed.
  4. Under Company Details > Company Statistics, select Total Amount Raised.  Enter desired values.
  5. You can also narrow down by funding round.  Go to Private Placement >Valuation, then select Round Type (Angel, Seed, Series A, Growth, etc).
  6. Add other criteria if desired, then click on View Results at the bottom of the screen.

In Thomson ONE:

  1. Click on the menu for Screening & Analysis.
  2. Expand section for Private Equity then click on Companies & Investors.
  3. Select your industry using the Portfolio Company Detail menu.
  4. Select the appropriate investment stage under Investment Details.
  5. Add other criteria as desired.
  6. Click on Generate Results to run the search.

In FactSet:

  1. Click on blue icon button in upper left hand corner and select Screening/Report Writing.
  2. Select Idea Screening 2.0 then Portfolio Companies.
  3. Add criteria and View Results. Lists can be exported into excel.
