Q.
Startups: venture-backed, by industry, geography, funding amounts & rounds

How can I create a list of start-up or venture capital backed companies in a particular industry?

A.

In Capital IQ

  1. Mouse over menu for Screening and select Screening > Companies.
  2. Select an industry, geography, etc. using sections under Company Details.
  3. In the Company Details section, click on Ownership and select Pending and Current Sponsor Backed.
  4. Under Company Details > Company Statistics, select Total Amount Raised.  Enter desired values.
  5. Under Company Details > Company Statistics, you may also wish to select Year Founded.  Enter desired value.  By adding a fairly recent founding date, this helps ensure that the funding was recent (there's no way to add a date value to the funding in a company screening).
  6. You can also narrow down by funding round.  Go to Private Placement >Valuation, then select Round Type (Angel, Seed, Series A, Growth, etc).
  7. Add other criteria if desired (Industry, Geography), then click on View Results at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Tip: Capital IQ also allows you to screen for HBS alumni (current/former professionals and board members).  To add this criteria, go to Education-->Colleges/Universities.  Type in Harvard Business School.  Select it by adding it to the right hand window. Click Add Criteria.  This will limit your list to companies who also have HBS alumni in these roles.

In Pitchbook:

  1. Go to Advanced Search-->Companies & Deals-->VC-Backed Companies.
  2. Use the left-hand navigation to add criteria under the various categories: Deal Type, Deal Criteria, Geography, Industry, etc.
  3. Tip: under Industry, you can also select Verticals for identifying companies whose focus isn't neatly captured by industry categories.

In CB Insights(follow the instruction on the webpage to set up your individual account if you are first time user.)

  1. Click on Advanced Research on the left-hand side navigation.
  2. Select Company Search.
  3. Add desired criteria under Industry & Geography.
  4. Under Company Attributes, check Private under Company Status.
  5. Under Financing & Exit, add information about funding such as deal size, round number, round types, deal dates, valuation, etc.
  6. When finished, click See Results on the top left-hand side navigation.

In Preqin:

  1. Click on Search For, and select Companies & Deals from the drop down menu.
  2. In left-hand navigation, click on Company Search.
  3. Using the filters near the top of the page, select "nanotechnology" under Sector Verticals.
  4. You can apply additional filters, including location, amount raised, company stage, and employee count.
  5. Click Manage Columns to add/remote columns to the display.
  6. Export to Excel. Note the company search module limits exports to 1000 companies at a time.

In LSEG Workspace(follow the instruction on the webpage to set up your individual account if you are first time user.)

  1. Click on the Search Tools tab and select Private Equity/VC.
  2. Select a Deal Type and Investment Date under Required Filters.
  3. Select the appropriate investment stage under Quick Filters.
  4. Begin typing Industry in the Add Filter text box under Quick Filters. Make a selection (NAIC Industry or SIC Industry recommended).
  5. Make your industry selection(s).
  6. Add other criteria as desired.

In Crunchbase:

  1. Use Chrome browser shortcut on any one of the computers # RR3-RR10 in the Stamps Reading Room
  2. Go to Advanced Search --> Companies
  3. Use the left-hand navigation to add criteria under the various categories
