How to identify companies which navigated/are navigating a turnaround

Turnaround Management Association (TMA): The Turnaround Management Association recognizes notable turnarounds by appointing awards annually in several categories.  Review the awards archive to identify companies of interest.

Capital IQ:

  • Go to Screening--Saved Screens
  • Locate the T & T Idea Screen from the list.
  • Adjust criteria related to credit ratings as desired.

LSEG Workspace

  • Type in ADVRES to go to the advanced research screening.
  • Change date range to desired time frame
  • Search for turnaround in the title of the report
  • Limit results to company reports
  • Exclude non-broker research
  • Add additional filters as needed

ABI/Proquest: Copy/paste the following into search: MAINSUBJECT.EXACT("Turnaround management").  Add a date range to identify companies early to mid-turnaround (i.e., to exclude older and most recent results).

Business Source Complete: Copy/paste the following into search: DE "CORPORATE turnarounds.Add a date range to identify companies early to mid-turnaround (i.e., to exclude older and most recent results).

Factiva: Copy/paste wc>500 and hlp=turnaround and atleast2 turnaround into search.  Under Subject, exclude Sports and Politics. Add a date range to identify companies early to mid-turnaround (i.e., to exclude older and most recent results).


How to locate contacts at known companies

Capital IQ:

  • Go Screening--People
  • In the second column of sections, at the bottom, find “List Management”
  • Under List Management, select “Add Companies”
  • Within “Add Companies,” type tickers or company names to identify companies
  • Once you have added companies/tickers, select, “Add Criteria”
  • On the screening page, go the third column, and find section, “Education
  • In the “Education” section, select Colleges/Universities
  • Enter Harvard Business School and click "Add Criteria"
  • Click View Results

How to analyze an identified company:

Capital IQ:

  • Type company name or ticker into search bar
  • From the company profile page, use left-hand navigation to navigate to financials, ratios, filings, earnings call transcripts, key developments, deals, etc.

LSEG Workspace:

  • Type company name or ticker into search bar
  • From the company profile page, navigate to News & Research and select Company Research for equity research reports
  • Use the filters on the left to focus your results 

Tegus:

  • Type in name of company and any relevant keywords to locate expert call transcripts
  • Can filter by type of call (with executive, customer, competitor, etc.)
  • Transcripts available as full text or audio

Factiva:

  • For articles on the company, try copying and pasting the following into search: hlp=[company name] and atleast3 [company name] and wc>1000
  • Note: can click Examples next to the search for for definitions of search commands
  • Add additional keywords to focus your search if needed.  

How to locate academic research on turnaround management:

ABI/Proquest:

  • For academic literature on turnaround management, copy/paste the following into search: MAINSUBJECT.EXACT("Turnaround management")
  • Limit results to Scholarly Journals
