Q.
Bloomberg download limits

What download limits are there for the Bloomberg terminals and what should I know about them?

A.

Each Bloomberg terminal has both a daily and a monthly limit to the amount of data that can be downloaded from it.  Limits are calculated based on the number of securities in the download and the number and type of variables for each security.  If you see the following in Excel after downloading results, you have reached one of these limits:

  • #N/A Authorization
  • #N/A Limit
  • #N/A Mth Lmt
  • #N/A Unknown

Please be judicious in downloading data to avoid hitting the limits for yourself and other users. Once the monthly limit is reached at a terminal, data cannot be downloaded until the start of the next month.

Please seek advice before downloading data for a large number of securities from either Baker Library staff or using the Bloomberg Help function.  Also consider alternative databases that may have the information you need (and can be used remotely as well) such as Factset, Capital IQ (Excel plug-in available), and LSEG Workspace.

If data is downloaded by accident, please consult a librarian immediately so a courtesy adjustment to the terminal limits can be requested.

More information on limits can also be accessed using the Bloomberg WAPI command.
